Isn't this the cutest little cottage. I think its somewhere in England but what a history it could tell us. I wonder about the folks who lived in it perhaps a century or more ago. I had a friend back in 1970 who lived in Whitby. She was my mother in law's sister and she told us about the huge big house she lived in which had stone walls 3 feet thick. It must have been amazing ... built around 1600. This little cottage with its pretty blue door sure could tell us some stories. *(s)

In case you don't visit my general Whimsydust Affair blog and may not have seen the new wallpaper I posted there I'm also posting it here because it is indeed vintage. *(s). I used flowers from my own photography, some vintage ones and also some of my painted ones plus the lady in the centre is my mum. Taken in Australia back in the fifties I guess. She was actually sitting on the bumper bar of my dad's truck. I think she looks great in here ....

She is buried back in Tasmania in a little country cemetery close to the horses and sheep in the field and I'm sure it was the ideal spot for her .. she was a country girl and loved the apple trees and the animals. The last survivor of the Titanic died last Sunday. Bless her... she was only 2 months old when the disaster happened. And such a nice thing Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet did recently .... offering to pay her nursing home fees for her ......... she will now be with her mum, and brother who both survived ... and with her father .. who tragically died on that fateful night. She was 97 years old.... Rest in Peace dear lady.

It was customary during the 1800's for women to exchange buttons from their garments with loved-ones who would then sew the souvenir onto a wide, black elastic band. An extravagant bracelet indicated a well-loved woman.

What a wonderful custom. But I could see that there might be competition from some women .. and who knows if you really got those buttons from loved ones or just gathered them yourself... :-) still ... its a sweet thing I think..

I miss my old mum. She is buried in a small country cemetery back in Tasmania. She was a country girl and would love the peaceful resting place we chose for her. It's close to a field where there are horses and sheep and lovely big shady trees.

Easter is nearly upon us... all those chockies in the stores. I can remember when I was a little girl at home in the small Tasmanian town we lived in. Easter would come and we'd always have a "couta" fish - barracouta - for our main Good Friday meal ... with of course... yummy hot cross easter buns. I have a hard time even finding them here in Canada. And of course there's no barracouta fish. Being a Catholic we never ate meat on Fridays .... and certainly no easter eggs till Easter sunday. Boy have things changed now. As I've grown older I think sometimes I might have been brainwashed by religion ...... never entering a church without a hat on ... if no hat... then we would just put a lace handkerchief over the top of our heads ... bit like a little veil I guess.

How is this for a teapot... I love it...

so many clever people out there who design and make so many beautiful things. I would love to add this one to my collection. I think all of us collect some thing or another. I love elegant boxes whether they are for hats, or in the shape of hearts, painted, or decorated in fabric and other materials. All sizes. All sorts. Round, square, heart, rectangle, oval ... I love to paint them too with pink and white roses. I have a few nice teapots as well... but none like this stunner.

Pretty teapot... I love teapots... My obsession with them seems to have come only over the past 5 years or so. When I came to Canada to marry my Brian his mum had died .. and she had a couple of very pretty teapots which I "inherited".
There is nothing nicer than putting tea in a pot and sharing it with a friend or even oneself. Taking the time to really sit back and sip the refreshing brew. In a pretty teacup of course.....

Found a new book at our library yesterday .. and I'm already half way through it. By my favourite author... Anne Perry.
I had read all the books she had written and this one is the latest so it was a pleasant surprise to find it on the shelves. "Buckingham Palace Gardens" is
of course set in Victorian London ... and there's been a
murder committed at the Palace. The Prince of Wales
somehow I think is involved seeing that a lot of speculation
surrounded Jack the Ripper back in 1888 ....
Many people still think it had a royal involvement
and that royalty could have indeed been the Ripper.

It's quite a story and one of her best I think although all of them are wonderful.

Reflections of the Past - the name of my blog.... :-) I am often thinking of my past back home in Australia... when I had my mum and my dad alive and well. Our lives were happy even though our means were meagre. I had no brothers and sisters ... so I had lots of beautiful and cherished pets to adore and play with. Times were so different then. Christmas would come and we'd go up into the bush and find a tree .. often not a pine because they were few and far between but it would be put in a tin bucket filled with water and decorated with the shiny things we had in the big box in the shed.

Gifts were often wrapped in brown paper and I was lucky enough to get cherries and oranges in my christmas stocking. Cherries seemed to be the biggest thing at Christmas. There were certainly no gorgeous children's clothes like I now see here in the shops for little ones or teenagers. Lives were simpler and somewhat nicer ....... Christmas reminds me of those I loved back then and now ...... and yesterday as I put up my tree here in Canada I added a small photo of my darling Wilbur dog in amongst the decorations. I will miss him this year ......

Christmas is fast approaching. Do you remember these little birds from years gone by. We had quite a few of them and I remember mum putting them onto the branches of our christmas trees when I was a little girl. They were shiny and bright and looked great. Clipped on with a metal peg like thing. I guess they still have them ...... but I've not seen any around. I love decorating our trees especially here in Canada when I can look out the window and see snow all around me. I'm going to do a pretty silver and white one this year.

Something yesterday reminded me of being back in Australia and a young girl and having my mum put the butter on a saucer and sit it near the fire ... so it would melt and she'd be able to put it on our sandwiches. I was talking about what we didn't have back then .. in the fifties and a microwave oven was one of them... so was margarine.... I guess that's why it became so popular because it was soft and more spreadable especially in the winter .... than butter was. :-)

I remember not having a hair dryer .. and having to lean down in front of the fire or the heater to get my hair dry before I could go to school. And of course my lunch went into a brown paper bag ... there was no plastic wrap then either. Makes you wonder how we managed at all without the things we have now... but then again.... I sometimes think we were far better off. People took the time to say hello... you didn't have to lock your doors ... and things went by at a much slower pace.

As I reflect on the past it brings me back to Australia when I was a little girl. I was always afraid of the huntsmen spiders ... I and others call them tarantulas. They would scare me to bits and if I returned now I would still be scared of them. I wasn't scared of our snakes that would always be somewhere in the bush ... my cat brought one inside one day and it slithered under the door of the entry closet where we hung our coats and put our boots. It wasn't a big snake but it took me some time to get the junk out of the cupboard and finally get the snake out the front door.

I remember one night when my then husband went to a lodge meeting. I was alone in the house and in the passageway there was a tarantula on the ceiling. I was so scared of it and couldn't remove it ... that I had to stay up that end of the house till he returned many hours later. And they would inevitably find their way into our cars. Urgh!!! just thinking about it gives me the heebee jeebies ....... lol....... but I do love my big imitation spider that I have put on the bush outside our window for Halloween. He's in a big cobweb and looks great.

they are usually easy to make and there are so many styles. I remember my mum back in Australia would knit them or crochet them .... when I was a small girl. Her friends would always be wanting one too so it seemed she always had those needles in her hand.

I'm all into white and pink.... just recently I re-arranged my shelves on the cupboard so that all the white crockery I had and pretty mugs etc were in the one place. The change was inspired by my purchase of white chairs and a table that were on sale at the end of summer .... and my garage sale finds earlier in the year of some really nice, textured white huge pillow shams. They are like tapestry almost ... so I made them into four cushions for my lounge suite.

White always seems to be crisp and clean and bright .... always cheery and nice.

As I wandered around our little town yesterday on my walk (without my beloved Wilbur who passed away in March)... I miss him so much..... I looked at the green lawns and thought to myself that soon it would be winter and the ground would be covered with snow and ice.

It reminded me of being back home in Australia .. not the snow and ice of course... but the fact that in the summer our lawns would die off and be just a swatch of yellowed and dried dead grass. I commented on my other blog yesterday too ... that I'd seen an advertisement on the telly where they will spray your dead grass ... green... for the purpose of selling your house and maybe striking a bargain because it looked "normal". I thought I'd seen everything till I saw that ad. :-) Back in Oz in the summer if I had a special rose bush or something that I didn't want to see die... and when I was a little girl and we only had tank water which came from the roof when it rained.... we would let our bath water get cold, or the washing machine water... and bucket it out to the plant to water it.

It would be saved and survive unlike the rest of the garden and grass. We were not able to use sprinklers or hoses ..... we didn't have them .... because the water was so precious and could not be wasted. How things have changed.... we take it all for granted these days.

My oh My .. how quickly these weeks go flying by. No sooner have I added something to my blog then its time to add something else .... :-) I'll be glad when the 4th November is over and done with and the USA has a new President. The advertising and back stabbing and bitterness is incredible - just hate all that stuff.

I wonder how the politicians of long ago did their campaigning. No televisions, no radios, no quick laser printers to do their banners. What a process it must have been. I guess they hand made their slogan signs and rode their horses around and nailed them to trees and buildings. One good thing I guess back then would be no polls .... the polls drive me mad. They ask about 2,000 people on how they would vote and then say McCain is behind Obama ... or vice versa.... it all seems silly really ....... no-one will really know till the election day is over.

Hurricanes... nothing we can do about them.... except do what is

recommended by those in charge and say our prayers...

As I watch the news today about the one that is approaching Houston, USA...

they mentioned one back in 1900 which killed 8,000 in the same area...

Galveston...

"So many died that corpses were piled onto carts for burial at sea.The bodies were so numerous that burial was not a viable option. Initially, the dead were taken out to sea and dumped; however, the currents of the gulf washed the bodies back onto the beach, so a new solution was needed.Funeral pyres were set up wherever the dead were found. Browsing through a catalogue this evening I saw something I would love... A soft ice cream maker.... it even had little containers for the sprinkles or choc chips or whatever you wanted to add to it. Made me think of how my mum used to make it before we could ever buy it in containers. There were so many things that we had to make ourselves .... jam was one .... we always had lots of raspberry, blackberry, and strawberry and apricot... it was my job to smash the kernels to add to the apricot jam. I loved it when I got some of those on my toast. :-)

nowadays of course its all in the supermarkets for us already done and packaged up so neat and pretty its difficult to walk past and not be tempted. And I'm amazed at the stuff I find in the ice cream containers ....... rolos, turtles, smarties, cookie dough, kitkats even..... there's nothing plain about ice cream anymore. :-)) thank goodness........ lol

A sweet vintage get well card. Love the red roses. Flowers sure do make us feel better. I can remember many times when I was in hospital and the nurse would bring a bunch of flowers for me from my dear friends .... or maybe from the people at work ... I would make sure they were watered every day ... and as I lay there in the hospital bed with them on the dresser beside me it sure did help to know that people were thinking of me. I love getting flowers... don't have a favourite although I do like just the plain old white daisies ... or the perfume in the boronia from Australia ....... violets and little bouquets ...... arh!!!!!!! so many gorgeous blooms in all sorts of varieties sprouting forth from the soil and showing off in all their glory. How clever is that ??

I sure do love the ribbon on her hat. Bows and boxes are some of my favourite things. Bows of all size, colour and fabric. I have metal gold big bows atop my framed stitching positioned on the wall.... and of course some big gold metal ones to hold back my curtain swags ... couldn't leave those back in Australia. :-)
